Tips on Pencil Portrait Drawing – Composition

March 18th, 2012 No Comments   Posted in ebook Art

Digital Montage

Composition refers to the manner in which your subjects are positioned relative to each other on the page. More formally, it is the arrangement of forms and spaces within the format of the page.

* Balance

The main characteristic of a good composition is that it creates a feeling of balance in the viewer’s mind. This balance should be present on at least two levels:

First, there is the balance of position. This means that the forms and spaces out of which the portrait is made up should be balanced relative to the vertical and the horizontal going through the center of the page.

Second, there should also be a balance with respect to value. The darks and lights should balance each other out in an overall sense. In other words, having too much black on one side or a complete lack of it is not the recommended course to take.

* Experiment

Having said that, do not be afraid to experiment with the distribution of forms, spaces, and values. Sometimes an unexpected deviation from the perfect balance gives excitement and interest to a drawing.

Follow your artistic sensibility. With practice, this sensibility can be developed and soon you will acquire a natural sense for good composition and how and where to surprise the viewer.

* Shapes

When considering the composition of your drawing you should think in terms of four major shapes: the triangle, the circle, the rectangle, and the square. Any of those shapes can be the point of interest of your portrait.

All other shapes should be arranged in support of that point of interest. Essentially, this means that the viewer should be led or guided towards the intended focal point of the drawing.

* Focal Point

One common compositional mistake occurs when the subject matter outside of the focal point is arranged in such a manner that the viewer is led in a direction away from the center of interest. In other words, the viewer is discouraged from looking at the area the artist thought was the most interesting.

In this regard we should remember that in the West, the viewer’s eye tends to enter a drawing or a painting from the left (just as we do when we read from left to right). Therefore, a good composition often has an entry point on the left of the drawing and from there leads the viewer’s eye to the focal point.

* Detail

The focal point should also be the area where you add the most detail to your portrait drawing. Areas deemed less important can be less developed and left to be finished by the viewer’s imagination.

Don’t forget, a portrait drawing should not be a copy of the photograph. Ideally, the personality of both the subject and the artist should be reflected in the end product.

* Check Balance

Another way of assessing whether or not you have a good composition is to cover up one shape or another and see if it improves the balance or not. A good composition is such that if you remove one shape, the whole drawing is clearly thrown out of balance. If you feel that by removing a certain part of your drawing the balance improves, by all means, leave that part out.

Much more can be said about composition. Entire volumes have been written about compositional rules and processes. However, developing the idea of balance on the levels of position and value will give you a very good start.

Famous Places in France – Top Ten

March 15th, 2012 No Comments   Posted in Art History

There are so many famous places in France, that it would be impossible to see them all in one trip. If this is your first visit to France, the options can seem overwhelming…where do you go? Which are the best places to see?

Here is a snapshot of some of the most famous places in France that you, or your family and friends might like to visit – depending on your interests, whether this is historical sites, museums, areas of natural beauty or food and wine.

If you are spending a couple of weeks here you could easily visit most of the places listed below. It will be a whirlwind trip, but is certainly doable and you will have many wonderful memories.

Some of the most famous places in France are in Paris!

1. La Tour Eiffel

The Eiffel Tower, built in 1889 by Gustave Eiffel for the Universal Exposition, is without a doubt one of the most popular tourist attractions in France.

It’s amazing to think that the Eiffel Tower was, for a time, seen as an eyesore and even ugly; it was almost knocked down in 1909.

2. Musée du Louvre

The Louvre museum, once a royal palace, is now one of the most well known art museums in the world, featuring paintings such as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, as well as spectacular artworks by Michelangelo, Raphael and, Botticelli.

3. Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris

Next in line is the beautiful Gothic cathedral, Notre Dame, built from the around 1163 to 1345, visited by more than 12 million people a year, and one of the most famous french monuments.

4. Arc du Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe and magnificent Ave des Champs-Elysées, are spectacular to see. The Arc was commissioned by Napoloeon to commemorate the victories of his armies; the tomb of France’s Unknown Soldier lies here, and every evening a memorial flame is lit.

5. Versailles

If you can, try and visit the Palace of Versailles, built during the reign of Louis XIV – known as the Sun King (Roi Soleil) to display his wealth and power of the monarchy at that time. Versailles can be easily reached as a day trip from Paris. It is without question, absolutely spectacular, and one of the most dazzling things you will probably every see.

6. Mont St Michel

Mont St Michel is one of the most recognisable landmarks in France, located just off the coast of Normandy. In fact, it is the next most visited site after Paris!

Its hard not to be awed by the sight of Mont St Michel, with its Gothic-style Benedictine Abbey perched high above a rocky outcrop.

7. Mont Blanc

Mont Blanc (meaning white mountain in French) is the highest mountain in the Alps, lying between Italy and France. Chamonix is here, the site of the first Winter Olympics, and one of the most popular places to visit in France for skiing.

Even if you’re not planning to ski, it’s well worth a visit.

You can take the Aiguille de Midi cable car for spectacular views of the mountains. Definitely one of the highest (and probably one of the most exhilarating – or scary, depending on which way you look at it) – cablecar rides you’ll take!

8. Chateaux de la Loire

The Loire Valley, playground to royalty from the 15th through to the 18th centuries, boasts many beautiful renaissance chateaux.

There are several hundred castles in the Loire; some of the most popular are Château d´Amboise, Chambord, Chenonceau, Blois and Cheverny.

The Loire is also known for its fine wines too, and you can sample Muscadet, Sauvignon and many more.

Heading south, there are even more famous places in France.

9. Carcassonne

Carcassonne, in the Languedoc region, is Europe’s largest walled city and one of the finest examples of medieval architecture.

Carcassonne’s towers and pointed turrets look like they have come straight out of a fairy tale or Walt Disney movie. But there is no make believe here – it’s all for real. Carcassonne is also one of the most most popular french monuments.

10. Lascaux

Some of the finest prehistoric art collections can be found in southwest france.

The ancient cave paintings, drawings and carvings that you can see here are truly awe inspiring, some dating as far back as 35,000 years.

The Lascaux sites (now a replica) are very popular tourist attractions in france, and there are many others too that are worth visiting.

And last but not least: french food and wine. Wherever you go, you will be able to try local specialties, whether this is bouillabaisse in Marseille, camembert in Normandy, or foie gras in the Perigord.

Soup Facts – Fun Trivia!

March 13th, 2012 No Comments   Posted in Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol

Are you a lover of soup and soup recipes? Besides the great taste and variety that soup has, it also has a wide array of uses in our histories of the world. Here are some known and little-known soup facts that you might find interesting. I did!

o Can you believe that Americans sip over 10 BILLION bowls of soup every single year! That’s a lot of soup!

o Every year, 99% of all American homes buy soup – turning it into a $5 billion business. Whoa! I’m in the wrong business!

o Who eats more soup?. Men or women? Well, for a typical lunch, women seem to be more than twice as likely to eat soup as men. Statistics say, 9.6% vs. 4.0%.

o When was the earliest evidence of our ancestors eating soup? About 6000 BC! And guess what kind of soup it was? Hippopotamus!

o So, in the late 1700s, apparently the French King was so enamored with himself that he had his royal chefs create a soup that would allow him to see his own reflection in the bowl. Sheesh! But as a result, consommé (clear broth) was born.

o Since we’re talking about the French here’s another interesting tidbit of soup lore that I had to include on this Soup Facts page. In the French Court of Louis XI, the ladies’ meals were mostly soup. Guess what the reasoning was? They were afraid that chewing would make them break out in facial wrinkles! If this were true today, it would put plastic surgeons out of business!

o This one cracked me up! And yet, it’s a fact that intertwines fashion, eating utensils and of course, soup! Here it is: Why did thin soups became all the rage in Europe during the 17th century? The spoon was invented. (How did they eat soup before the spoon???) Why was the spoon invented? Because of the latest fashion trend: large and stiff ruffles that the men and the women of the high courts wore around their necks. (I bet that’s how clowns got their ideas for their costumes!) The design of the spoon was to accommodate wearers of those large ruffles and keep themselves from getting dripped on!

o The first liquid nourishment most babies get is the milk from the mother’s breast, often times called “Milk Soup.”

o Frank Sinatra always asked for chicken and rice soup to be available to him in his dressing rooms before he went on stage. He said it always cleared his mind and settled his tummy.

o Another famous person who loved soup was Andy Warhol. He told someone that he painted those famous soup cans because its what he had for lunch – every day for 20 years!

o Soup has always been known as the curative for any ailment of the heart, mind, soul and body… and this old Yiddish saying says it best… “Troubles are easier to take with soup than without.”

o “Of soup and love, the first is the best.” – from an old Spanish proverb. (Sometimes, I think that is very true!)
