What Is Modern Art?

As a non-artist, when I think of modern art, I think of art that has recently been created, and trying to think in a larger scope of history, I think of recent as in the last 100 years. In many ways, this is correct, but not completely. In the art world, different art styles are referred to as -isms. This probably sounds familiar from an old college humanities class. You probably learned about Naturalism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, and more. Well, some of these -isms are major category heads, with many sub-isms beneath them, and that is true with Modernism.

Modernism was an all encompassing movement that takes in other movements as well. Modernism took place during the first part of the 20th century, and though sub-categories under Modernism may be quite different from each other, they do hold in common the rejection of Naturalism and Academicism, both styles which followed rigid rules of painting that could be taught in school, and that closely resembled the natural world. Instead Modernists favored experimental art.

The modern world was changing, so art needed to change as well. Modern art would explore the new modern world, and artists chose to do this in various ways. But regardless of the form of expression chosen, all forms are an exploration of each artist’s own vision of life in their own way. Some of the sub-isms of Modernism, and what they explore, include: Expressionism which explores emotions and states of the mind, Constructivism which concentrates on social function, Surrealism tries to express the unconscious mind, and Cubism which explores the nature of representation.

These are just a few of the trends encompassed by Modernism, some are quite different, and others overlap with each other, but to all these artists, art became a way to discover truth, whether it be a modern truth of Futurism, or a universal truth of Suprematism. They all tried, I their own way, to seek answers to fundamental questions about the nature of art and human experience.

Modernism lasted about three quarters through the 20th century, and by the 1970′s, modern artists were moving onto Post Modernism. Surprisingly, it was architects who took the lead in the development of Post Modernism, but much of the Post Modern visual art is a criticism of modern society.

Understanding a bit about Modernism and Post Modernism is helpful when discussing modern art. Plus, it is good to be familiar with the lingo of the art world, to use it correctly, especially to avoid confusion when talking with experts.

So back to the question of what is modern art? To the non-artist, all art created in the last 100 years is modern art, because modern refers to the present, or recent times. Modern art, in my mind, includes all of these -isms. Modern art does not directly resemble the subject, but is abstract. It is more difficult to understand but sometimes understanding is a mute point, the art is to be enjoyed.

The Modern Dog – Un Chien Andalou 21st Century Avant Garde Of Bunuel, Dali And Richard Black

In 1929 a surreal filmmaker, Louis Bunuel and an upstart artist named Salvador Dali collaborated to make the most outrageous avant-garde film of their times, “Un Chien Andalou”. This silent film made almost 100 years ago, stunned audiences with incredibly provocative imagery and remains a treasure to studied film aficionados. Yet as the century rounded a corner the clock had already melted on B&W silent films and Hollywood spectaculars, fast cuts and special effects crowd out vintage films for attention.

This original silent film was shown without a sound score to audiences throughout the early part of the 20th century. In the late 1940′s and 50′s Bunuel added a sparse sound track of classical music played at some performances. In the early 60′s it was again released with a classic soundtrack. It is agreed by most reviewers of the piece that without a soundtrack capturing the full spirit of the film, with its avant-garde kaleidoscopic imagery, makes the film unreachable for a modern audience. The film, if found, is in the dark corners with lost art films as quick musical shorts and stunning action films compete for the film audience.

Chicago composer and musician Richard Black has taken the astounding Bunuel/Dali visual masterpiece and blended an original soundtrack conceiving a new classic; a modern tour de force. “The Modern Dog” by Richard Black has embodied a creative blend of rock and electronic that pulses to the visual rhythm created by Bunuel and Dali, creating a new layer of aural pleasure specifically for this work.

The DVD is a Richard A. Siegel production distributed by Video Seconds. The DVD includes three new music videos, two of which were also inspired by the Avant-garde classic and are included with the extras on the Video Seconds DVD release. These extracted and modernized classics capture a new audience to a symbol of avant-garde through the music video medium. The DVD, appropriately named “The Modern Dog, Un Chien Andalou” is renewed into modern times.

Oil Painting – Most Popular Art Form Of The Modern Times

Oil painting is a distinct genre of painting where drying oil is applied as paints. Timeless possessions of arts, oil paintings down the ages are visual documentations of the history culture and lifestyle of the yore. With the moving courses of time new styles and techniques have made way into the paintings making them more enriched and versatile. Oil Painting is also very popular in the modern times. Various types of oil were used to create oil paintings. Linseed oil, poppy seed oil, sunflower oil and walnut oil were used commonly. Generally the paintings were carved on a canvas. But in some cases the paintings were framed out in paper sheets, cardboards, linoleum and wooden panels. Animal glue and gesso were used to coat the panel paintings. Modern gesso is a combination of calcium carbonate and polymer acrylic. It is used to increase the absorbency of the primer coat of an oil painting. Animal glue saves from the harmful acid effect of the paints.

In oil paintings the outline of the subject of a particular painting is first carved out on the canvas. Then pigments are mixed with oils to prepare shades of colors. Pigments having cobalt, manganese and lead were used in the early days to increase the drying process. The oil colors are then applied on the painting in the form of layers. With the advent of oil painting tubes the painters have been freed from the hazards of mixing oil with pigments.

Painting in layers is the conventional method of oil painting. This is done to enhance the effect of colors and bring perfection into the painting. First the “underpainting” is sketched out using thin coats of paints like the turpentine paint. The layer is let to dry up. After this several layers of oil paints are applied consecutively letting each layer to dry up completely before applying the next layer. It can take several weeks to months to dry an oil painting completely. After the work is sealed by the artist varnish is applied to bring the shining effect.

Oil paintings have been influenced by various styles of art namely renaissance art, figurative art, folk art, abstract art, contemporary art and modern art. The themes of the paintings were collected from various facets of nature, figures of animals and human beings, modern architectures and every day life. The inherent self of human beings and the various human moods and psychologies are also captured into bold lines and colors in the modern oil paintings. Raphael’s ‘La donna velata’ (1516) Titian’s ‘The Rape of Europa’(1562), Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’ (1503-1506), Van Gogh’s ‘The Starry Night’(1889), ‘Sunflowers’(1889) and ‘Wheat Field With the Crows’ (1890), Claude Monet‘s ‘Water Lilies’, Salvador Dali’s ‘The Persistence of Memory’ ( 1931) and ‘The Metamorphosis of Narcissus’ (1937) are legendary oeuvres of oil painting that inspire awe and veneration to the votaries of arts from time to time.

Middle Stone (Mesolithic) Age is considered the most significant phase of human evolutions. The era brought about a transition in the culture, art, and the overall lifestyle of the Stone Age. Mesolithic Age, though lasted for a brief period of 2000 years, but was a definite bridge between Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages. Innovations in day-to-day activities and the adaptation of the human race to altered environmental conditions were the defining ranges of Mesolithic Age. People began hunting, pottery making, and started living in settlements. The phase also marked the starting point of human expression in the form of art. The genre of art belonging to this age was mostly cave or rock paintings. These works differed from the rudimentary Paleolithic Art in a way that they were centered more on human subjects, rather than portraying only the animals of those times.

The people of this period were mostly vagabonds. They painted walls of caves, while wandering from place to place. These paintings carried mundane themes, portraying the objects of daily utility, such as bows, spears, and arrows. Most of these art works delineated the fauna, mostly bison, horses, aurochs, and deer. These paintings, predominantly red and yellow in colors, employed natural products, like manganese & charcoal. The Mesolithic Era mostly relates to the human existence in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Most of the famous rock paintings still exist in Lascaux (France), La Marche (near Lussac-les-Chateaux, France), Chauvet Cave (near Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, France), Altamira (near Santillana del Mar), Cantabria (Spain), Cosquer Cave (Marseille, France), and Font de Gaume (Dordogne Valley, France). These drawings represent some people with arrows, in some sort of rhythm, perhaps performing a daily ritual of dance.

The Mesolithic Art therefore, paved way for the most refined Stone Age Art known as Neolithic Art. Neolithic Art was much more creative and intelligent, which stands as an eyewitness of the evolution of human race through the ages. There is a whole lot of cave paintings dating back to the Neolithic Age, but only a handful of paintings exist from the Mesolithic Age. Art historians are still grappling for more evidence from Mesolithic Art.
