Almond Blossom is a classic Vincent Van Gogh oil painting which is hugely popular today as a print, poster of handmade reproduction for the homes of Van Gogh followers due to it’s bright, friendly feel and healthy feel. Van Gogh painted Almond Blossom as a present to his brother Theo who had recently had a child with his partner. The gift was carefully chosen as a bright, upbeat work with almond blossoms to represent the new born and inspire hope for the future. This positive vibe still strikes a chord today, which is the reason for this painting becoming so much loved. Vincent would always turn to his art when trying to give across his emotions and gratitude to others in his life. No-one had a greater impact on, or did more for Vincent than Theo and he was well aware of this. Despite their common squabbles and problems each very much loved each other and wanted the best for their brother.
The other important to make on Almond Blossom is that it is a good example of how Van Gogh had put a lot of effort into studying Japanese art and how it began to appear in many of his works afterwards. His main experience of Japanese art had been in Paris where much existed and many other artists had similarly been interested in it both before the career of Vincent, and afterwards. The painting sits alongside around 3 or 4 others as key works from this Dutch master which followed a very close style of Japanese print styles and colours, particularly the Japanese wooden blocks which were brought to the attention of many painters around this time.
